Starting Dance As An Older Child - Is It Possible?

First of all, YES! Before you read any further you should know that you can start dance at any age!! In this specific case, we are talking about dance between the ages of 1-17. But in general, no matter your age, you can start at any time!

I think there is this myth that if you want to be a dancer you need to start at 3 years old. And while we do have classes at Alive starting as young as age 1… that doesn't mean that dancers of all ages shouldn't be starting dance as a new activity! There are so many reason that dance is a great activity to add at any age but I will give you 5 reasons dancing is a good idea to start when you’re a little older.

  1. Dancing is about feeling the music and moving to that music. You don't need any practiced skills or formal training to do this! The point of dance (while being a great form of exercise for your child) is self expression. Moving and feeling the music. And the way that children do this depends on the child! Some kids want to move to classical music in ballet, some want to move and grove to funky beats in hip hop class, some want to move to those slow ballads in contemporary or lyrical.

  2. Physical activity is good at any age! Whether you're 1 years old or 17 years old, participating in physical activity is great for everyone! Why not allow your dancer to move and groove to their favourite music.

  3. Team work is a huge part of dance. Dancers are asked to work together to create a beautiful piece of work that they then get to perform. Dancers in class depend on each other to show up and participate like the rest of them. They lean on each other when they have questions, they hang out together and bond in class but also outside of class. It’s a team environment and we want these teams to cross the finish line (year end shows) together!

  4. Joining dance as an older dancer means your child is aware enough to know what kind of style they might like. Often for young dancers classes are more limited to certain styles (ballet/jazz/hip hop/tap) but the older you get, the more styles of dance become available! As an older student, your dancer would know exactly what music they like to move to and listen to. This makes it so much easier and more enjoyable for them! Essentially when you join dance as an older student, you have the ability to chose your class style!

  5. Confidence is something all dancers gain in dance classes. They learn something new and practice it, they look the part, they take pride in their work and in the end their confidence has been built up and they are able to perform on stage at Year End Show. Confidence is something that children of any age can benefit from. Older dancers often feel pride in the progress and work they have made in the classroom and are so excited to be able to present their hard work - even on the sometimes scary public stage. It is such an amazing sight to see when a dancer who started out a little timid can shine and perform on stage at the end of the year! Older dancers can especially benefit from this confidence builder as they grow older and gain more knowledge of themselves and the world.

It’s never too late to start dance, whether your child is 3, 8, or 17! We have classes in all styles, for all skill levels, for all children. If your older dancer is interested in learning more about dance now is a great time to try a class.
