What is Troupe?

Troupe

This is our professional division of Alive Danceworks and is for the more serious dancer. Beginning at age 7, these girls/boys dance many hours per week learning technique in many disciplines as well as choreography they will perform all over! The dancers audition each June for the next season and are placed in groups if accepted. The groups have a set schedule of mandatory classes but many of our dancers do add to that as well so that their schedule includes more of what they wish to focus on. Teachers assist the students with choosing added classes that benefit their training. Dancers aged 7-10 have a mandatory 4-5 hours of classes per week and dancers over 10 have a mandatory 6 hours of classes per week within their set schedules.

*Workshop class: which is their choreography class. They then perform and take to festival these choreographed dance numbers.

Hip-Hop Troupe - these dancers focus on the hip-hop style. They take on workshop class as well these dancers must add at least 2 more classes within our schedule in any desired style.

Jazz Troupe - these dancers focus on a number of styles including ballet, lyrical, jazz, contemporary musical theatre and more. They take on at least one and older groups will take 2 workshop classes. Added to their schedule includes technique classes in the other styles. Dancers in Jazz Troupe may add the hip-hop workshop class without having to take 2 more classes on top of their schedule if they are accepted into both Hip-Hop and the Jazz programs at audition time.

We encourage our Troupe dancers to add to their schedule more technique classes. We as teachers are able to suggest programs that will assist each dancer with their individual dance goals.

Production

The 2011/2012 Troupe Dancers will be performing in a production of a popular story (it's a secret until June 8th). The dancers rehearse during their class time for group numbers and can audition in June for lead roles. The lead roles may be asked to attend rehearsals outside of class time. Productions are put on by the Troupe Program only and allow the students to experience the stage in a different way. We encourage our Troupe dancers to audition for lead roles and extras as it educates them on the audition process as well as how a production comes together with sets, stories, characters and more. Alive Danceworks Performance Troupe puts on a production every second year. On the off years, the Troupe has the opportunity to travel. (see travel section for more details)

Festivals/Extra Shows

Troupe

The students will participate in festivals and shows during the year. Some of the festivals are no charge to the students. Others will have fees that go along with. These fees will be non-refundable and after they are paid, we expect that the students will attend the festival. These festivals often take place on the weekends in the Spring. We expect that students will attend and if they are not able, they will give the studio lots of notice.

Festivals/Competitions are part of the Troupe Program. Each Jazz Troupe will perform at least 2 numbers at each festival and Hip-Hop Troupes will perform one. Our Troupe normally participates in 2 Festivals/Competitions each year.

Solos/Duets/Small Groups

As well, we offer small groups, solos and duets as extras if dancers are interested in more of what festival has to offer. You may audition in June to be considered for extra festival numbers.

Travel

Troupe

Troupe

Every second year the Performance Troupe is given a travel opportunity. In the past years we have visited and performed in Disneyland, California Adventure, Universal Studios, Catelina Island, San Diego, Monarch Of The Seas Cruise Ship and with Carnival Cruise Lines. As well, the students have visited multiple studios on our adventures. Millennium Dance Complex and EDGE both in L.A are 2 of our favourites.

The students often fundraise to help pay for these fun adventures. The fundraising is always optional but Travel expenses are over and above studio fees.

Giving the dancers these travel opportunities really opens their eyes to the dance world and all that it involves. The students enjoy performing and also learning from professionals in the industry. Not ever trip is performance based... we enjoy workshops, classes and discussions with amazing instructors from all over the world.

As well these travel opportunities promote other aspects of learning such as teamwork, money responsibilities, independence and more. We always have a great time and learn a ton! There really is something special about making travel memories as a Troupe Dancer.

Expectations

Troupe

AS A TROUPE STUDENT - I commit to being punctual for the start of all my classes. I understand that I must come prepared with proper dance attire, knowledge of my choreography and a strong focused presence of mind and body. I will treat my classmates, teachers and parents involved with respect. I also understand that it is my responsibility to stay on top of all the on goings of the studio and any information on upcoming events.

AS A TROUPE PARENT - I commit to taking an active role in the dance experience that my child has chosen. My involvement will include helping in organizing my child's time and transportation in order to be punctual for dance class. I understand there are numerous shows, rehearsals, festivals, workshops, trips and more that take place outside of class time. I will be sure to watch the studio calendar and notices and do my best to ensure that the student is able to attend these extras. I understand that there are extra fees beyond the cost of class instruction. This may include; costume fees, workshop fees, travel fees, troupe uniform fees, ticket sales and more.

Auditions

Troupe

Dancers must Audition for the Troupe Program each year. The Auditions are usually held in June of the previous season for the next fall. The dancers will participate in a class in either jazz and/or hip-hop during the audition process. The Director and Instructors of the Troupe Program will view the class and determine placement for the program. A list is posted at the studio locations a few days after the audition process. Placement is final for the troupe program after the list is posted. Casting for productions as well as extra festival numbers will be posted at this time as well and is also final placement.

REGISTRATION - after auditions, the dancers that are accepted are asked to take care of registration on the listed days in June. Miss Jenn and other teachers are available on the listed days to assist the dancers with choosing extra classes and helping them customize a schedule that suits their dance desires for coming year.

Summer Intensive

Troupe dancers should be taking Summer Intensive each year. It is important that the dancers stay on top of their training through the summer months so that they are not behind come fall. Summer Intensive normally takes place in August and involves amazing teachers brought in from places like Vancouver, Toronto, L.A and NYC. We carefully choose instructors that inspire and motivate the dancers to become the best they can be. They bring with them unique styles and fun choreography that are not only exciting but also encourage new ways of moving. Summer Intensive is usually one week in length and is a great time for all! Watch for Intensive details found on the website in Spring.
